Gravel Calculator – How Much Gravel Do I Need?
Use our simple guide below to estimate the amount of decorative stone required for your project. If you’d rather not work it out yourself, just send us your measurements and we’ll calculate everything for you.
How to calculate gravel
To calculate how much gravel you need, you’ll need:
Length (metres or feet)
Width (metres or feet)
Depth (recommended below)
Recommended depths:
Driveways: 40–50mm
Paths & patios: 30–40mm
Borders & decorative areas: 20–30mm
Use this formula:
Length × Width × Depth = Volume
(in cubic metres)
Then:
1 bulk bag covers approx 8–10m² at 40–50mm depth
Quick estimate guide
Bulk Bag Coverage Guide:
- 1 bulk bag = approx 8–10m²
- 2 bulk bags = approx 16–20m²
- 3 bulk bags = approx 24–30m²
This is based on typical driveway depth.
Common examples
Example 1
Driveway: Driveway: 5m x 4m = 20m²
You’ll need approx 2–3 bulk bags
Example 2
Garden area: 3m x 3m = 9m²
You’ll need approx 1 bulk bag
Example 3
Border: 2m x 1m = 2m²
You can use 20kg bags instead of a bulk bag
